10 Things I've Been Doing Instead of Blogging

Lately, I've been going through a lot of life changes. Some is personal life, some is work life. And so my blog has taken a hit. I didn't mean for it to happen so soon in my new blog, but it is what it is. I'm bad at keeping on a strict schedule, I'll admit it.

I'm at a weird cross-roads where I miss blogging but I don't have the desire to actually do it.

So here you have it - the things I've been doing instead of blogging.

1. Sleeping more.

2. Watching a lot more tv.

3. Forcing myself to eat healthy food like broccoli and hummus.

4. Getting back into Fusion, my exercise class twice a week.

5. Cuddling and playing games with my little girl.

6. Watching movies with Friends.

7. Watching Friends with husband.

8. Playing with the two cats and two dogs now in our household.

9. Playing way too many games on my phone.

10. Still trying to eat that broccoli and hummus.

Hope to get back at blogging soon!

My Personal Planning Essentials

I've recently fallen in love with all things planning - the planners, the stickers, the pens, the Washi. I want it all. I'm still new to the planning scene, but there's something so exhilarating about writing something in your planner in the coordinating color with a decorative sticker. It just warms me up inside. Here are my favorite planning essentials that I never want to live without again.

1. My Personal Planner

Ironically, my personal planner is actually from a website called 'Personal Planner'. This was my first time paying a chunk of money for a great planner and I chose this website one because I could pick  which month to start the planner, how I wanted the layout, what I wanted at the bottom of each page, and what I wanted in the back of the book (eg. blank pages, lined pages, coloring pages etc.) It's really been working for me so far. I've been using it since November 1st. The cover is personalized with my name as well.

2. Blogging Planner

This is a new-to-me planner, so I don't have much to say about it yet. I'm really starting to like the 3 section spread that I've heard so much about (as my personal planner has an hourly schedule). This is The Happy Planner from Me & My BIG Ideas. Since it's very new. I'm only starting to use it in March to plan blog posts and such. I can't wait to dive in and really make use of it.

3. Great pens

You can find my favorite Staedtler Triplus Fineliner pens here on Amazon. I have the pack of 10 but really want the pack of 20 as well. I use them to color code everything - my work shifts, husband's work, stuff regarding the children, fun things, bills, due dates, etc.

4. Stickers & Album!

I don't know how others organize their stickers, but I would be lost without my album from Anxiety Aids

I'm just a beginner when it comes to stickers, but I'm already obsessed and wish I could keep expanding my collection. I have two orders on the way at the moment and I can't wait.

I don't decorate my planner completely with a full weekly spread (yet!), but I do love to decorate mine a bit.

My album and a handful of stickers are from Anxiety Aids. The rest of my stickers come from the following shops: Budget Friendly Plans - Now Paisley Prints, It's Just Paper Co & Planner Mania. I'm happy to say those are all Canadian Etsy shops with amazing stickers and I'm happy to recommend any of them.

What I Love and Hate in a Blog

I'm sometimes guilty of following too many blogs, and thus not being able to keep up with them all. So many blogs are just that good. There are also so many blogs that turn me off. I might get a little hate for this, and some are super picky things, but here are a few things people do when blogging that turns me off of their blog:

  • Subscribe Pop-Up. If there's a pop-up as soon as I click on your blog it's a huge turn-off. I like to get to read a bit before you're bugging me to subscribe.
  • Captcha. They're getting harder to decipher, and after the third attempt in a row I'm tempted to unfollow.
  • Too many giveaways and reviews. I'd rather read a real blog about a real person, and not a bunch of products. Do it in moderation and I have no problem with it. Same goes if you're only ever doing linkups.
  • Too-Long paragraphs. Break it up. If it's too long, I start skimming, then I might lose sight of what the post is really about. Then I have nothing to comment. And I click away and go on with my day.
  • Too much happiness. If you're super happy, good for you. But if you're blog is nothing but sunshine and rainbows and you never write about one negative or bad thing that happens, then it just feels like you're a lie. I mean, sometimes your car breaks down or your kid gets sick. Complain, dammit.
  • Music. If music starts up as soon as I open your page, I'm out.

While I'm sure I could go on, I'd also like to dive a little bit into things I absolutely love in a blog:
  • Realness. If you write about real life - the good and the bad, I'll love you for it.
  • Humor. If you can make me laugh, I'll never leave you. Even if you don't constantly make me laugh, as long as I can tell you have a great sense of humor, I'll still never leave you.
  • Nice photos. Of cute babies and stuff. And a photo of you somewhere. If I can't find a photo of you, how can I be sure you exist?
  • Blog design. If you're blog is super tidy and organized and pretty to look at, I'll look longer. No fancy blog design required.
  • Variety. If you're blog is full of random stuff, I tend to enjoy it more. Even though blogging these days seems to be all aimed towards consistency and niches.
  • Acknowledging the little people. If you take the time to respond to comments or tweets or Instagram comments of big or moderate bloggers, that's good. But if you also take the time to respond to the little people who aren't blog famous or on their way to it, you're amazing. Some people only socialize online with people who can further their blog or business and I hate that. (PS, I don't mean every single comment. Obviously not everyone has time for that.)

What are some of your favorite or most hated things when it comes to other people's blogs?

Free Printable: Daily Planner

As you may have already guessed, I am a huge fan of any kind of printable that helps keep me organized. Even with my own planner from Personal Planner, I still find myself wanting something bigger to keep track of my daily tasks and reminders, especially for when I'm at work.

It took a long time of using free printables online, before I finally whipped up my very own daily planner printable! I used one of my favorite blue/green color schemes and some fun block text to throw this baby together.

I definitely have plans to make other planner printables in the future, but in the meantime, you can download the PDF for this baby for free right here:

10 Things I Love About Being a Girly Girl Mom

My daughter is a huge girly girl. Anyone who's ever met her knows pretty quickly. Pink has been her favorite color for as long as I remember. She was once quoted saying "Pink is my life." She loves all things dolls and Barbies, princesses and dresses.

Here are some of my favorite things about being her mom!

1. All the pretty clothes!

2. Reliving my childhood and being able to buy Barbies again. There are so many more Barbies and accessories now than I ever thought possible. (Barbie eye doctor set, anyone?)

3. Having her randomly tell me I'm pretty or beautiful or gorgeous sometimes. Because she hears it so often from me.

4. Shoes! Glitter shoes! Purple and pink Converse!

5. Trying (and sometimes failing) at new hairstyles.

6. Doing her nails. More importantly - see how happy it makes her to have pretty nails.

7. Laughing at her ability to choose a food or ice cream flavor based solely on its color - pink.

8. Seeing her get interested in a lot of my husband's hobbies and favorite shows - she likes to drive cards around in Grand Theft Auto, pet some Pokemon on the 3DS and watch Digimon.

9. Listening to her humming and singing to herself all the time. Mostly Frozen songs, but lately she's picked up a couple from Tangled and the new Cinderella movie. And the Digimon theme song.

10. Having someone close who just wants to put on a dress and dance around sometimes. It's just not a dance party without a dress, she believes.

What's your favorite things about being a mom in general?

* Disclaimer: Yes, I know some of these can also be applicable to if I had a male child as well, but it's my list. Also, this post includes a few affiliate links *

10 Tips to Get You into a More Active Lifestyle

Anyone who knows me well, knows I don't have a clue about anything when it comes to gyms and working out and especially healthy eating. Not at all. I'm one of those smaller people who always hears comments about not needing to work out because "you're so skinny!"

It's as if I can't want to have a fit, healthy body just because I'm not overweight.

I've grown tired of it. And with a brand new 30lbs added on to my body recently, I found that it was time to finally start living a more active lifestyle in hopes that I'd have a more energized and longer life. And wouldn't keep adding on the pounds.

So I'm by no means an expert. I'm 100% a newbie here.

But if you're thinking about getting into a more active lifestyle and are worried you might not be able to keep up with it, here are some tips to help keep you motivated.

It's what's been helping me!

10 Tips for a More Active Lifestyle

1. Make a Motivation Board on Pinterest

We will start with something easy you can do without lifting more than a few fingers. Make a fitness motivation board on Pinterest, and pin what inspires you. Some ideas to pin:
  • Easy/beginner/at home workouts
  • Workout songs
  • Cute active wear
  • Healthy meal ideas
  • High-energy snacks
  • Photos of fit people to inspire you

2. Start Small

Create your own easy start up-routine. I used to do squats or sit-ups or dance around or run up and down the stairs.

3. Use Stickers!

If you're a planner (like me!) and love planner stickers (like me!) these may come in handy! Etsy has a ton of options for workout stickers to use in a planner, calendar or anywhere you'd like! I especially love the 'Walk Away Fatty' stickers from Anxiety Aids Etsy shop. She has a few other 'inappropriate' sets of stickers as well.

4. Have Something to Wear

Make sure you have at least one workout outfit that you feel great in. If you don't feel great in it, you won't want to wear it. Start with one outfit and if you start getting more consistent and serious about working out, then expand your workout wardrobe. Moisture-wicking or quick-dry items are my favorite when I'm working up a sweat. I never realized what a difference it makes until my workout clothes still in the laundry and I need to wear regular sweats or yoga pants.

Also - get dressed! Most often just putting on one of my workout outfits inspires me to work out.

5. A Kick-Ass Playlist

Nothing can get me more in the mood to move than a great upbeat playlist. YouTube has a lot of good workout playlists to get you started.

6. Find a Fitness Buddy

If you have a friend with an active lifestyle, ask them their tips. Find someone to join a gym or a class with. I myself could never get into a good routine of working out. I'd try to go to the gym for a few days but then would find myself not having time for a few weeks. Once I found a friend who was looking to start working out more, we both started going to a fitness class together, and now she encourages me to go. It's something we often do together.

7. Find a Good Class

This goes with what I mentioned before - a friend and I found a workout class called 'Fusion' (a combo of Fusion is a combination of kickboxing, turbo, strength training, cardio and choreography). It makes me sweat, it works my muscles, you can do a regular workout or take little steps to push yourself harder. Most importantly - it's really fun. It really makes me want to workout.

8. There's an App for That

Find an app to keep you challenged! Back in the day I really liked how My Fitness Pal app worked, although I'm not familiar with it now. Here's a list of 49 Fitness Apps of 2015. It seems my child deleted my fitness app I've been using, so I can no longer recommend it as I lost the name.

9. Challenge Yourself

Write down your goals and/or challenges somewhere you can see them. Fun challenges can be things like:
- Do 30 squats a day for a week
- Train yourself to run in a short marathon
- Be able to go from doing 0 pushups to 10!

10. Focus on the Why

When you feel yourself getting discouraged, remember why you're doing this. Whether it's for health reasons or weight loss or whatever reason, it takes a lot of time and effort before you'll see results. So encourage yourself to keep trying.

10 Anti-Valentine's Day Date Ideas

I have never been big on Valentine's Day. I supposed it all started back when I was single for all of my teenage life. But even now, after being in a few long relationships (now married!), I'm still not 100% sold on the day. I don't feel the need for flowers (but don't get me wrong - there's never a wrong day for chocolates!) and I hate going out to a busy restaurant or a crowded theatre just because it's the 14th of February.

I'd much rather just do something simple and low-key. It doesn't need to be romantic, but it if you're with someone, it doesn't hurt if it is either.

So here are some date ideas for when you're not a big fan of Valentine's Day but you still want to do something

10 Anti-Valentine's Day Date Ideas

1. A double or triple date with friends! We enjoy getting together with friends to play Cards Against Humanity (a party game for horrible people, if you haven't heard of it before). If you're single, you can just do this with other single friends and couple friends.

Cards Against Humanity

2. Similarly, you could also have a game night just for the two of you - playing cards games or board games or video games - whichever is your thing. (I myself enjoy some Mushroom Wars battles on the Playstation 3).

3. Have a no electronics night. You can even turn off all the lights and just light up some candles.

4. Go for a drive around town. Toss a quarter - heads means you turn left, tails means you turn right.

5. Rent a movie and pop some popcorn. Yes, people still rent movies these days. You can even get some popcorn seasoning to make it more exciting.

6. Have an anti-Valentine's Day gift exchange - give yourselves a limit and go on a hunt to beach each other the funniest present you can within that budget. Or make it a little more exciting and use the same idea but at an adult store.

7. Have a creative night - build your own coupon books for each other or make a silly card. Buy a cheap canvas from a dollar store and some children's paints and make some art. Or just build some Lego.

8. Buy the ingredients for your favorite cocktails (or mocktails, if that's your thing) and cook a nice supper at home.

9. Bake! Make cookies or cupcakes or anything your heart desires! Let's be real - the foundation of most relationships is just eating together anyway.

10. Drag your mattress, sleeping bags, pillow, blankets or whatever else you need and have a camp-out in the living room. Or if you're lucky enough to live somewhere that you have the option, have a camp-out outside.

What are your actual Valentine's Day plans?

10 Things You Should Know About Me

10 Things You Should Know About Me by Coffee Brain Blog

1. I'm a Mother

And being a mother is the most important part of me. On September 25, 2011, I gave birth to the tiniest little girl. All of a sudden, she's not a baby anymore but a 4 year old child filled with ideas and stories. She is my best friend and can brighten up the worse days. She can also be a moody handful at times and make some days hard. She's worth it. Her name is Chloe.

2. I'm Married

To the strangest, most irritating man child. But that's what I took on when I signed the contract to adopt him. He's lucky he has a big heart and a funny imagination.

3. I'm a Step-Parent

My husband has a daughter who's only 8 short months older than my own daughter (and my daughter is also not my husband's biological child). My step-daughter's name is Madi.

4. I'm a Stationary Addict!

Just ask the bag I take with me to and from work on a daily basis. It includes: My planner, a case of all my favorite pens and highlighters, two notebooks, my decorative sticky note pad, and my sticker album. Naturally I also have some Washi tape at home and a million other pens and notebooks. And I browse Etsy planner stickers like it's my second job.

5. I'm Addicted to Music

I'm a country music girl at heart but I love my share of everything. Some upbeat that makes me want to dance and workout is my favorite right now.

6. I'm Also a Junk Food Addict

I want to eat all the chips, all the chocolate and especially all the Ben & Jerry's ice cream. Throw in some Pepsi and nachos too. I love it all. It really hard for me to eat healthy but I'm trying my best to make better food decisions for my health. For my daughter.

7. I'm New Into Fitness

I've always been tiny so I've never needed to work out due to my size. Recently I've started gaining more weight. Still nothing to worry much about, but I did go up an entire pant size. That was the push I needed to start a more active lifestyle. I still get a ton of comments about how I don't "need" to work out because I'm so skinny. I'm so tired of hearing it, but I don't let it get to me anymore. I enjoy the workout class that I go to and I wish I had the time (between my family and job) to do a bit more.

8. This is a New Blog

But I'm not a new blogger. I had an online journal years ago in the early 2000s, then I started a blog when that website closed, and moved on to another blog. Most of those were just personal journals. I hope bigger hopes and dreams for this blog, as well as writing about important events in our lives.

9. I'm a Planner

I absolutely love making lists, filling out planning sheets, any kind or organizational printable. I love planning parties and events. I love writing things down on my calendar. I love organizing.

10. I Love to Write

I love writing stories. Even it's hard to write stories, I love thinking up ideas. I've been attempting to write stories since the early 2000s when I was just a young teenager.

Three of My Biggest Goals for 2016

My Three Biggest Goals of 2016

At the beginning of February I wrote 7 Tips for Setting Goals. I made that list of tips based off my experience working on my goals this year. As I mentioned then, I have a list of 52 Goals in 52 Weeks that I'm trying to complete, with the dealing being the end of 2016. It has big goals and small goals, so I need to stay organized to make sure I focus on different goals at different times and take steps to get it all done.

Today I want to talk about 3 of my bigger goals from that list, and what steps I'm taking to complete these goals.

1. Write a Book

My Three Biggest Goals of 2016

Something almost no one knows about me is that I used to love to write. Starting around the time I was 10 years old, I started writing. Mostly sappy, sad little love stories. In 2001, I started writing a story that has been with me ever since. 15 years! I named one of my main characters, a male, Kelley because of my then obsession with Chris Klein and the movie Here on Earth. I've been writing small parts of that story for years but have never done an actual full draft of the story. The story also needs a ton of work as most of the ideas for it were thought up when I was a teenager. My goal is to have a full rough draft of this novel by the end of 2016.

Sub-goals (so far):

- Write 1000 words per week
- Read 'Emotion Amplifiers' e-book

Progress:

- Wrote 885 words week one
- Came up with a lot of good ideas for changes
- Started outline for the first section of the book

2. Start and Grow a Blog

Three Biggest Goals of 2016 by Coffee Brain Blog

I haven't set very specific goals on this yet, but I want my blog to be helpful to others and fun for me. One week ago, I made my first real post: 7 Tips for Setting Goals and my second post was Why We Need More Honest Parenting Stories. I'm still working on post ideas and what things I enjoy writing about. I hope they'll all come together

Sub-goals:

- Work on blog design
- Start a binder or notebook for blog ideas
- Write, write, write.

Progress:

- Two posts down so far.

5. Grow my personal Twitter to 200 followers

Three Biggest Goals of 2016 by Coffee Brain Blog

I started February 1st with 33 Twitter followers and I'm already up 15. I'd say that's decent progress for a week.

Sub-goals:

- Retweet
- Converse
- Follow interesting people

Progress:

- As I mentioned, up 15 more followers in a week. Not bad.

So I'd say overall things are going well so far. I'm definitely keeping myself busy with the first two goals, but I'm really enjoying myself with both.

What are currently your biggest goals?

Why We Need More Honest Parenting Stories

Why We Need More Honest Parenting Stories

Just over 4  years ago I had a little girl. And let me tell you she was little . She was 5lbs 12oz and was covered in loose, stretchy skin just praying for some fat to fill her up. She still has next to no fat. But that’s not the point of the story.

It just hit me all of a sudden how much of a different world we are living in now than that 4 years ago. Four years ago, Facebook was just a way to creep people or keep in touch with friends and family.

A little while into my fresh parenting gig began the boom of groups and pages. Buying and Selling. Chatting and discussing. A local mommy group was where I went for advice and encouragement. They were great. It was a game changer knowing I wasn’t alone in a lot of my struggles.

Again, more recently I’ve noticed another change in social media regarding parenting. It’s becoming more real. People are talking about their mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety. Post partum depression isn’t such an unheard of thing. People are talking about their fears, flaws and mistakes.

Finally, I understand that we’re all struggling.

We’re all winging it.

I knew nothing of the baby blues or post partum depression. I thought that since I didn’t feel sad or cry, that I was fine. Instead, I suffered in a different way.

I suffered from Could Not Relax Syndrome.

At the beginning I was just tired all the time, as most new parents are. And when people would take the baby so I could nap, I just felt stressed. I felt like I should be the one with the baby. What kind of mother needs someone to watch their baby just so they can sleep? It was the same for when I left the house without her for any reason. Guilt.

(See this awesome Facebook post about how we parents need sleep)

When I got past the sleep hurdle and was no longer a zombie, it was a different kind of problem.

I lost interest in all my old hobbies. When the baby would nap, I would have to cleaning bottles or cleaning the apartment. I had to be busy. Or if it was night time and the baby was asleep, I’d have to go to bed as soon as possible in case we had a rough night. There was no more reading or writing for enjoyment.

I felt like I was just this ghost or empty shell of the person I used to be. I believe this never-ending stress and guilt was just the beginning of the anxiety I now deal with on a regular basis.

It took a long time before I started to feel myself again. I’m proud to say that I now have friends, a life and interests. And not all of them revolve around my little girl. Although I will admit, I still think of her and miss her when I’m gone but it’s not in the same guilty way.

It’s just in the way that I love being around her cute self.

A happy, healthy mother makes for a better household. A better life for the little ones.

Take care of yourself. It’s okay for your kid to see you be your own person. Do your hobbies. Put on makeup. Dress up in something a little nicer than usual just to go to the store. It’s okay for Mom to focus on herself sometimes, not only the family.

I’m not just a mother.

I’m a person.

Facebook groups and other moms on social media have given me a better outlook on my life.

And THAT'S why we need more honest stories about parenting and motherhood. So we know we're not alone. So we know what amazing or scary things may be about to happen next. So we're as prepared as possible. So we have the encouragement. So we know it's OKAY to really need some sleep. To need some help.

So to all of you who decided to be honest about life and motherhood, you’re a lifesaver.

From this point forward, I vow to be a mother who always tells the truth. Especially about the struggles.

Who's with me?

7 Tips for Setting Goals

Coffee Brain Blog: Goals My Way

I'm a very goal-oriented person. Usually. Sometimes I forget to set goals. Or sometimes I have so many goals and to-dos that my head is like a blizzard of ideas. This year I seem to be the latter. So, so many goals.

This year, one of my goals was to organize my goals. See how complicated this is getting already?

So here are the steps I'm trying to follow. Also known as my advice on how to set your own goals.

1. Make a Master List

I used Day Zero Project and made a list: 52 Things in 52 Weeks. I still don't have a full 52 items on my list, but I added as many things as I could think of that I wanted to accomplish this year. Now, you don't have to go overboard like me and try to think of 52 goals. You can just make a reasonable list of a few goals, or hundreds of goals if that's your thing. Just remember, the more goals you have, the more overwhelming it can be.

2. Prioritize Your Goals

Figure out which are your biggest, most important goals. Figure out which ones you want to focus on first. I chose 'Write a book', 'Start and Grow Blog', 'Organize My Goals' and 'Have a Baby' <-- Hah, not kidding! Some people may choose to pay off a certain large debt or start a healthier lifestyle or change careers.

3. Set a Deadline For Each Goal

Now my deadline for all my goals is by the end of 2016. Your deadline can be anything that works for you. Make it realistic and attainable. Some people can write a novel in a month (see NaNoWriMo) but that's a huge goal. I know I can't manage that with a full-time job, a husband, a 4 year old and some cats. But by the end of the year? I think know I can do that!

4. Make Sub-Goals

Focus on each large goal, one at a time and make sub-goals. For 'Write a book' I decided I wanted to try to write 1000 words a week. I have a goal to keep my desk and room tidy so I can focus during writing time without getting distracted. I wrote 'tidy desk' in my planner on each Sunday evening slot for the next couple of weeks as a reminder. I want to start the week fresh and ready to go. For 'Start and Grow blog' I made a sub-goal to start jotting down post ideas as much as possible. I also have the goal of posting regularly - starting with once every Monday.

5. Find a Way to Organize

If you have a planner, write in your deadlines. Schedule in some time to work on your goals - like an evening to write, a morning to go to the gym. Or use a notebook to keep your goals written down with sub-goals and deadlines. For me, I use Day Zero to keep my goals all listed, a notebook to keep track of bigger goals and sub-goals, and I plan some goal time in my planner. I write down my deadlines in RED to stand out.

7 Tips for Setting Goals

6. Motivate

Make sure to keep yourself motivated to complete you goals. There may be times where you feel like giving up. You can do this either by setting rewards when you reach certain milestones - such as a fancy, expensive pen you've been wanting after you write 5000 words in your book. Or your favorite piece of cake after you've managed two weeks of healthy eating. Or find a friend to hold you accountable for completing your goal. Someone who can act as your cheerleader. Maybe quotes or songs are more your style. This saying, found on my to-do list notepad/mouse pad from Chapters Indigo gives me a little boost of encouragement sometimes when I need it.

7 Tips for Setting Goals

I will have more on motivation at a later date!

7. Complete & Celebrate

Make sure to celebrate and give yourself credit when completing your goals. Not everyone is so dedicated. Blog about it. Tweet about it. You did it!

What are you goals for this year or this month?

Items seem in this post:

My amazing pens shown in the post photo. I use these to color code my planner and color code lists. Sometimes I use them to simply doodle and color. I only have the 10 pack but now that I've tried them, I'm dying for the 20 pack for more variety.

Back in the game

New year, new blog.

Some people *cough* my husband *cough* hate the thought of New Year's Resolutions. They think they're stupid. I don't fall into that category.

I love the idea of starting fresh goals with a fresh year.

But I'm a person who loves goals and lists and such every day of the year. Husband, not so much, but that's neither here nor there.

This isn't my first blog. Or second. Or 4th. I've had a few. None popular. All pretty boring.

But 2016 is going to be the year of me, and I don't care if this blog is popular and I don't care if it's boring. And I don't care if I use too many commas and start too many sentences with the word 'and'.

So I'm going to start blogging again. It's been a long time since I've wanted to.

I get distracted. I got distracted writing this so it's been hours since I wrote the last paragraph. This is why I'm a bad blogger.

And this concludes my first blog post of my 2016 blog.
